Thoughts and questions about the "domestic church"

I hear that term in some circles. Domestic church.

I'm pretty sure that refers to one's family.

The person that I associate with my first hearing it was Saint John Paul II.

The key thing that I got from that bit of information was that one's family is where the faith is first taught and handed down.

I may be sorely mistaken but I interpret that to mean that you don't pass off your duties as a parent to raise your child in the faith to the Institutional Church. I also take it that That Institutional Church that we all know and love (hopefully) exists and functions well only as it is inwardly formed by said domestic churches. Our families.

In other words, families should be the prime teachers and examples of such virtues as love, honor, mutual respect, freedom, prudence, justice, fortitude, temperance, faith, hope and charity... I could go on and on with all the good and healthy facets of family life that we all need and deserve.

Am I mistaken or being misleading with anything I am saying here?

I for one am very grateful for my family.
