Daily Mass Reading Comments for Physical, Mental and Spiritual Fitness: Friday February 7, 2020

Readings can be found here:

The book of Sirach's description of David in the first reading is pretty awesome. The first line of the reading is what caught my attention: "Like the choice fat of the sacred offerings, so was David in Israel."

David was no slouch by any means.

Remember He prefigured Christ in the Old Testament.

Christ was no slouch of a man.

The second part of the readings that I like are from the Alleluia verse (Lk 8:15):

"Blessed are they who have kept the word with a generous heart, and yield a harvest through perseverance. "

What made David so great in God's eyes? (And Christ infinitely more so by analogy) A generous heart and perseverance in bringing in the harvest. Finishing the job so to speak.

Finally a comment on the Gospel Reading itself Mk 6:14-29:

John the Baptist's treatment at the hands of Herod and his family. Again. John was no slouch regarding his gifts as a man. He prefigured Christ. (I don't think most people grasp the greatness and importance of John to the Gospel Story.) I know I don't.

All I know is that he was a great man with a generous heart and persevered in finishing his job of bringing in the harvest of the Good News (the Gospel).

He was treated very poorly for his efforts.

I will just finish with a personal prayer that Christ shed His light on these mysteries of Faith to help me also have a generous heart and to persevere this day in bringing in the harvest through the Holy Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity of body, mind and spirit.
